Yavneh in Telz

The Yavneh girls’ gymnasium, the separate teachers’ seminary, and the surviving school archive in Lithuania.

The school remembered as a “seminary”

The prewar girls’ institution was primarily the Yavneh Hebrew Gymnasium for Girls, an Orthodox secondary school founded in late 1920 under the influence of Rabbi Yosef Yehudah Leib Bloch and the Telshe yeshiva leadership. Lithuanian authorization is dated November 8, 1920; the new building was dedicated on December 12, 1920, during Hanukkah. Some later accounts use 1921, likely the first full school year.

Hebrew was the main language of instruction. The curriculum joined Tanakh, Jewish law and Jewish history with Lithuanian, German, Russian, French, mathematics, history, geography, natural science, art, music and gymnastics. A Lithuanian heritage source reports 136 girls around 1921.

Girls’ secondary school

Yavneh Hebrew Gymnasium

Opened in Telz in 1920. It offered a broad secondary curriculum for girls and placed out-of-town pupils with local families.

Teacher training

Yavneh Teachers’ Seminary

A separate institution that moved from Kaunas to Telz in 1923 or 1924. It trained religious Hebrew teachers. A particular family reference to “the seminary” needs to be checked against the person’s record.

Researcher Isabelle Rozenbaumas reported finding 486 files, including about 350 diplomas and roughly 200 photographs, in Lithuania’s Central State Archives. About 100 items were placed online through Bat Kama At?, but no complete public name index or scan set has been verified.

No Rudensky or Sorotzkin match was found in the limited public material. That is inconclusive because most material is not publicly searchable and names may appear in Lithuanian, Russian, Polish, Hebrew or Yiddish forms.

Documented Bloch connection

The dedication and founding circle

An original Yeshiva University Archives program identifies Rav Yosef Yehuda Leib Bloch as the keynote speaker at the girls’ gymnasium dedication on December 12, 1920. A Telz historical account also names Rav Avraham Mordechai Bloch among the communal activists who helped found the school.

No reviewed source yet proves that Hadassa Chasya Bloch, Rachel Bloch Sorotzkin, or any other particular Bloch daughter attended prewar Yavneh. That remains open until a diploma, class list, photograph or LCVA student file is found.
